How recording labels are getting new artists.

All recording labels are getting new artists by using Artist and Repertoire (A&R).

It is a special department of any recording label, whose work is to find a new artist which is special in its own way, so it does not have to be a perfect singer or something like that. It can just simply have something interesting, distinguishing. It also works as a way the artist or label can talk to each other (label to an artist and the other way round). So, it is somebody who helps an artist to go from rags to riches, but it only happens when the artist steals the show.

One of the most popular A&Rs is Michael Alago, who found Misfits, Metallica, White Zombies, and the others. He did it by visiting a lot of bars, pubs and by listening to music, talking to artists, getting to know them better, etc. At the moment, in our modern society, there are easier ways of finding new artists.

Main music platforms, such as Spotify and Apple music bought out the big companies that study and analyze data (such as "sound charts" and "chart metrics") on the artists, new and not so new.

In order to know and understand, how does an A&R work I had to make up my own either band or a singer that has special features. I have decided to create a band with the name "Out of Hell"

This is how I think the band should sound like:

What is a music campaign.

The campaign is essentially an organized series of actions that are made to achieve a certain goal/target. In the media, it is essentially all the things that are working nicely together in order to get towards the goal within the same area of media.

Music campaign usually consists of

  1. finding a group/singer that you would like to do campaign for
  2. deciding what you should do in order to make it more famous and wanted by public
  3. start to advertise it by all the ways possible, via  creating them a social media account
  4. creating a website
  5. starting to merchendise band/singer

Normally, some big artists tend to have a big team that does all the things that are related to its campaign.

As an example of the music campaign I will use the latest campaign of the latest album of the "Imagine Dragons".

Origins -- the latest album by Imagine Dragons, was released in the end of 2018.

This album consists of 16 songs, where 5 of them were released as singles, in order to achieve two things
  1. to increase and gather the type around the new, upcoming album
  2. for the fans to have something new to listen, because if we take look at the discografy of the band we can see that there has not been that much of new songs and albums.

Talking about actual promotion, the upcoming album was announced on the 3 October 2018 via social media. There were used not only band's accounts but also personal accounts of members of the band. On the next day the album was already put on pre-order. The album has three versions and for the each version there was created different front cover

The first one was the standard version with 12 songs on it

It has a simple design, because the album does not include any of extra songs or anything like that

The second album was a digital deluxe version and it consisted of 15 songs and now the from cover has changed abain. This time it is minimalistic, and you can see all of the members of the band.

The third and the last version of that album was a digital, international deluxe version that included 16 songs, the front cover has changed as well.

The cover is more minimalistic but it also has more details drawn, it is darker and gives supporters more idea of what the album is going to be about.

Critical Reflection.

We have created an indie-rock music campaign, that included social media, music video, and album artwork. The main social issues that were r...
